24 recruits begin a grueling five month fire academy. In this 90 minute documentary we follow their progress from beginning to end. Through their experiences we learn what it takes to successfully fight a structure fire – from the inside. In the darkness of Ricky’s Rib Shack, within its tarnished concrete walls, they will taste – for the first time – the chaotic blackness of firefighting’s harsh reality.
Meet Carly. Mother of a young boy, and wife of a firefighter – daughter of a firefighter. She now has the opportunity to follow in her father’s footsteps and make firefighting, truly a family affair.
Meet Mario. A young man whose childhood dream of joining the fire service has finally become reality: "I don’t care if I’m puking, dying, whatever the case may be, I will not give up!"
Meet Captain Lynch. A veteran firefighter whose dedication and commitment to the recruits, and the fire service, is expressed in his tough drillmaster persona: "You will not call in sick during these twenty weeks, unless you’re lying on your death bed and the priest is standing over you. And then I’ll negotiate with the priest!"
This is a unique firefighting documentary, only as they can show it. The director/co-producer is a veteran firefighter who was given unlimited access to all aspects of the recruits training. The cameras shot from inside the heat and smoke of the thousand-degree structure fire, from the middle of the action... as close as you can get.
So don your gear, mask up, and head into the most stoked up, burned out, smoked stained building in the West... Ricky’s Rib Shack.
It’s about going in!
